I created a demo of a sphere dangling from a grid of planes tied together by hinge constraints. If you hit spacebar a force will be applied to the sphere. Hit "F" to fire a bullet which will break the grid of planes and cause the ball and partial chain to fall to the ground.
For some reason, the hinge constraint only works in Blender 2.42. My compiled version of the new physics engine (1.9, i think) causes really weird behaviour. It could just be the way I compiled it, though.
