To Erwin and the Bullet devs:
I'm using bullet in a robotics application that requires realistic simulation of cloth and volumetric soft bodies.
I'm wondering if anyone is currently working on improving the soft-body simulation, e.g. speeding it up with the GPU. My application requires self-collisions and collisions with rigid bodies.

I believe soft body dynamics have received quite a bit of attention, particularly in regard to GPU acceleration. But these changes are mostly in the 3.x branch, I believe, so are not available in any stable distribution yet.
