ACM SIGGRAPH 2011 Course

Destruction and Dynamics
for Film and Game Production

Course Information:
Sunday, 7 August, 2011 | 2:00 PM - 5:15 PM | East Building, Ballroom A/B
Organizer: Erwin Coumans
Speakers: Michael Baker, Nafees Bin Zafar, Mark Carlson, Erwin Coumans, Brice Criswell, Takahiro Harada, Phil Knight

Course Overview:
This course focuses on film and game production practices in the area of rigid body and particle simulation and collision used in breaking objects and large scale destruction. The course will cover production aspects such as authoring tools and game engine integration, in addition to the computational and algorithmic aspects. Starting with a brief introduction to the basic theory, this course will continue with examples from specific films and games. Interesting commonalities and differences between film and game practice will be highlighted.

Tentative Schedule:
  • 2:00pm: Course introduction and overview of destruction and dynamics techniques (Erwin Coumans, AMD)
  • 2:30pm: Authoring destruction with the Dynamica Bullet Maya plugin (Michael Baker, Art Institute of Las Vegas)
  • 2:45pm: Destruction and dynamics artist tools for film (Nafees Bin Zafar and Mark Carlson, Dreamworks Animation)

    3:30pm: Break

  • 3:45pm: Deformable rigid bodies and fragment clustering for film (Brice Criswell, Industrial Light & Magic)
  • 4:30pm: Procedurally generating fragmented meshes for games (Phil Knight, Disney Interactive Studios)
  • 4:45pm: Accelerating rigid body simulation and fracture using GPU (Takahiro Harada, AMD)

    5:15pm: Close
